Safety precautions when using stadium flares

We recently attended the World Port Days in Rotterdam. One of the most discussed topics was undoubtedly the“stadium flares. Since there is a lot of ambiguity about this term, we decided to write a number of articles to explore it in more detail. Herewith part 2: Safety precautions when using stadium flares. We will leave improper use out of consideration. In the Netherlands it is not allowed to use emergency signaling devices for purposes other than an emergency situation without the permission of the local authorities. So this article assumes entirely that the user has permission to set off the signals.

Safety precautions when using stadium flares

Using stadium flares can be spectacular, but it also carries safety risks. Therefore, it is crucial to take proper precautions. After all, stadium flares are not toys, and without proper safety precautions, accidents can happen.

Important safety precautions:

  • Wear protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, to prevent burns and injury.
  • Always keep Fakkels far from flammable materials such as clothing and flags.
  • Light the torch in a well-ventilated area to prevent suffocation from smoke.
  • Never leave a burning torch unattended and extinguish it completely before disposing of it.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher nearby, especially in crowded environments such as a stadium.

These safety guidelines are critical to avoid serious incidents. Remember that an accident involving a stadium flare in a packed crowd can escalate quickly.

Regulations surrounding stadium flares in the Netherlands:

In the Netherlands, there are strict rules regarding the use of stadium flares. In most cases, it is illegal to bring flares into sports stadiums unless there is permission from the organization. These rules are in place to ensure spectator safety and prevent incidents.

Important regulations:

  • Stadium flares are prohibited in Dutch stadiums without explicit permission from the club or organizer.
  • Criminal penalties, such as fines or stadium bans, may follow if the rules are violated.
  • Some clubs work with fans to organize controlled pyro shows, using stadium flares safely and under supervision.

Applications outside sports stadiums:

Although stadium torches are most commonly associated by the public with sporting events, they also have several other uses. They are becoming increasingly popular at festivals, concerts and even weddings for creating a unique atmosphere.

Examples of applications:

  • Stadium torches are often used at music festivals for dramatic effects during performances.
  • At weddings and other celebrations, fire torches are used to create a romantic and atmospheric setting.

It is important that the same safety measures be followed outside stadiums as well to prevent accidents.

Environmental impact of stadium flares:

Stadium flares also impact the environment, mainly because they emit smoke and chemicals into the air. This is a growing problem, especially with the increased focus on sustainability at large events.

Environmental considerations:

  • The smoke produced by stadium flares can be harmful to the environment and air quality. This is one reason why emergency flares should only be used in emergency situations.
  • Sustainable alternatives are evolving, such as flares with biodegradable materials and less harmful emissions. Fakkels.com and the brands we sell are always innovating. For example, there have been several quality upgrades in recent years that have reduced or even eliminated the production of smoke.

Frequently asked questions about stadium flares:

What are stadium flares?

We recently attended the World Port Days in Rotterdam. One of the most discussed topics was undoubtedly the“stadium flares. Since there is a lot of confusion about this term, we decided to write a number of articles to look into this in more detail. Herewith part 1: What are stadium flares?

The product“Stadium flares” does not exist. It is a vernacular name for all sorts of other types of flares used mainly in sports stadiums, especially at soccer matches. This is where they derive the nickname. They create an impressive visual spectacle by giving off bright lights or thick clouds of smoke. These torches are often used by supporters to create atmosphere, and are known for their strong association with soccer hooliganism. All such use is not permittedby the government and thus prohibited by law. To make things extra confusing; there are also legal ways they can be used, and this does happen with great regularity.

Why are stadium flares used?

Stadium torches are used to create a unique atmosphere in sports stadiums, especially during soccer games. Their fiery glow and clouds of smoke create an impressive visual element that is often part of the supporter tradition. These effects cannot be matched in any other way. This makes stadium flares a hugely popular topic among the public, which only adds to the issues surrounding them. In addition to use in soccer stadiums, they are symbolic during celebrations, funerals, protests and concerts.

Key features of stadium flares:

  • They emit bright, colorful light or smoke, making them perfect for large crowds.
  • They can vary in burn time, color and intensity depending on the type.
  • Stadium flares are often part of organized pyro shows in stadiums.

Main reasons for use:

  • Enhancing the supporter experience and atmosphere during games.
  • Marking special moments, such as goals or winning a game.
  • Communicating emotions and team spirit among supporters.

Different types of stadium flares:

As mentioned earlier, stadium flares are not a product. The nickname covers different types of stadium flares, each serving a different purpose. The most common types are:

  • Bengal Fire: This type of torch gives off a small, yet bright, colorful light and is commonly sold as a gag and party firework. People use bengal fire to increase the excitement and joy of an event. This bengal fire can be described as the super-light version of real emergency flares.
  • Smoking Torches: These flares produce thick clouds of smoke and are especially visible during the day, making them ideal for use to get noticed.
  • Wax flares and fire torches: These flares are often used at events that focus more on atmosphere and lighting, such as festivals and weddings. These are not at all similar to distress flares, yet business owners gratefully take advantage of the confusion to do market them to the public.

Key differences between the torches:

  • Bengal fire provides bright light and intensity.
  • Smoke torches are ideal for daytime use because of their visible smoke signals.
  • Fire torches provide warmth and illumination during outdoor activities.

Fakkels.com has been known for years for its high-quality emergency signals (flares). Of course, these are only intended for emergency situations. Meaningful conversations about stadium flares

During the World Port Days we not only handed out flyers, but also had many enthusiastic conversations with visitors who were looking for that extra touch for their events. “Emergency signal equipment may only be used for other purposes when permission has been obtained from the local authority.” This initial reaction from our side raised many eyebrows. The in-depth discussions in which the word stadium flares was frequently mentioned were both educational and entertaining for all parties. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of confusion among the public about what is and is not allowed. We have done our best to take on this government role. The result was of course that we had very nice conversations with visitors, and even with civil servants and other government personnel.

View our extensive range online. Thanks to our expertise and passion for quality, we literally and figuratively bring fire into your life. We thank the organization of the World Port Days for the access we have been given. See you next year!

Emergency signals in football

We regularly read in the newspapers that incidents occur in professional football in the Netherlands involving the use of fireworks during and around football matches. Flares, bombs and smoke bombs are no exception during parades to football stadiums, training sessions prior to (important) matches and in the stands in the stadium. We regularly get the question from people ‘can I buy emergency signal equipment for football‘? and the answer is always: No, that is not possible! But what is possible? What are the rules and why do so many people set off emergency signal equipment?

A case: In the Netherlands we are the only legal supplier of emergency signal equipment of the brand FDF. Did you buy them elsewhere? Then you are in violation, because other sellers sell these products illegally. Always with the aim of making you break the law! This brand has been labelled as ‘illegal fireworks‘ by the Dutch government by illegal sellers and international traders, while this is not the case at all. This is because other parties do not have the expertise that we have built up over the years. Fakkels.com is the only legal seller of these emergency signal equipment recognised by the government.

The emergency signaling equipment we sell meets all national and international regulations and is therefore 100% legal to possess in the Netherlands. Are you allowed to use them at football? No, unless… you have permission from the local government or a pyrotechnic permit.

What are you allowed to do without a permit?

You may ALWAYS carry emergency signal equipment with you or have it stored at home. In the car, on the boat or on your bike. There is no unless, if or but. Law enforcement officers often try to make connections: “you are on your way to…” or if you are wearing a certain type of clothing they make an assumption. However, the law is very clear: There is no but. You may carry it with you for use in emergency situations, on land, at sea and in the air!

What is not allowed is improper use of emergency signaling equipment: The use of emergency signaling equipment without being in an emergency situation. You can be fined for a violation in flagrante delicto, and costs incurred for deploying emergency services can be recovered.

Therefore, ONLY use emergency signal equipment if you are in an emergency situation.
